A search of the New World of Travel report, written by Skyscanner, revealed that confidence in international travel is still low. 24% of Europeans believe that it is now safer to travel internationally than 21% of travelers to the United States and only 10% of Asia-Pacific travelers.
Search patterns for national, regional, and global flights reflect this sentiment. Skyscanner data also reveals that internal travel is on the rise. Last month, the share of searches for domestic travel around the world increased against the backdrop of changing travel restrictions * (13%). And in the midst of ongoing uncertainty, travelers are looking to move away from a much shorter deadline with less than a week of windows booking earlier this year (a 12% increase in search share compared to 2019).
Skyscanner executives predict that LCCs will find the fastest way to recover due to their business activities and point-to-point models.
At the same time, the decline in business travel revenue for full-service carriers indicates the uncertain future of this rental class and the need for innovation.
John Strickland, director of John Expert and JLS Consulting, said: “Low-cost carriers have a cost base that allows them to provide competitive pricing that, combined with creative ancillary revenue, enables them to attract customers profitably where other carriers can. Even the strongest LCCs have the liquidity to survive for extended periods of time – a year or more – even if they are based on most or all of their capabilities. If other airlines cut back or fail, they are ready to jump to new routes quickly whenever they see an opportunity. They have the advantage of operating in a wide geographical area and they can take advantage of the opportunity. “
