The Bahamas gained freedom from the United Kingdom on July 10, 1973. The capital of this country is Nassau.
The ancestors of the inhabitants of the Bahamas came from mainland South America who were the Arawakan language people. Besides that, the rich history of the Bahamas has resulted in its multi-ethnic culture including the majority of Africans, some Europeans, and others. Since the colonial era, Africans have been the largest group in this country. According to history, the first Africans who arrived in the Bahamas were freed slaves who initiated their new lives here.
The Bahamas is one of the richest countries after the United States and Canada in the Americas. Tourism and finance has been the main source of income for this island state.
This country has a multi-ethnic culture. The unique and colorful Bahamian culture is developed with a mixture of mostly African, combined with some British and American influences.
The individuals of this nation celebrate different festivals consistently. The most famous cultural festival is Junkanoo where thousands of people decorate themselves in various colorful costumes and ornaments and then they dance in the streets. In fact, many tourists visit this amazing land especially to witness this colorful festival.
The official language of this country is English. On the other hand, Bahamianese is another main language of this country which is spoken by both white and black Bahamians, although in slightly different forms.
In addition to the picturesque scenery, this beautiful country is home to various notable cuisines including seafood dishes, tropical fresh fruits, and rum-based beverages. Again, various delicious special dishes are available at the roadside stands, beachside, and fine dining establishments. International cuisines are also offered, especially at hotels.
